ABOUT ILSAC

The School of Legal Studies (SLS), established in 1962 under the University of Kerala and later integrated into the Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1971, stands as one of the pioneering institutions of legal education in India. Over the decades, SLS has built a strong reputation for academic excellence, producing distinguished legal professionals, academicians, and policymakers who have contributed significantly at national and international levels. The School offers comprehensive programmes including LL.B., LL.M., and Ph.D., which blend rigorous academic instruction with a strong research orientation, thereby equipping students with both theoretical foundations and practical skills.

In its pursuit of holistic legal education, SLS has fostered various academic bodies and student-driven initiatives. These include the Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer Chair on Human Rights, which undertakes pioneering work in human rights-based discourse; the Cochin University Legal Aid Clinic (CULAC), which extends legal assistance to marginalized communities; and the Cochin University Human Rights Association (CUHRA), promoting awareness and advocacy on pressing rights issues, etc.

A recent milestone was the establishment of a chapter of the International Law Students Association (ILSA) in 2022, which has since evolved into the International Law Students Activity Club (ILSAC). With a broader mandate, ILSAC actively promotes engagement with diverse aspects of international law through seminars, research projects, student competitions, and collaborative activities, thereby enhancing SLS’s stature as a hub for global legal learning.

ABOUT THE COURSE

The Three-Day Certificate Course on Maritime Law is designed to provide participants with a thorough and engaging introduction to the legal principles and regulatory frameworks that govern activities at sea. As maritime affairs play a central role in global trade, security, and environmental stewardship, understanding the intricacies of this field is vital.

This course is tailored not only for aspiring maritime lawyers and legal scholars but also for professionals in the shipping and maritime industries, policymakers, and individuals with a keen interest in the legal dimensions of ocean governance. Over the span of three days, participants will be immersed in interactive lectures, case studies, and group discussions that encourage active learning and practical application.

The curriculum examines the complexities of international conventions, national legislations, and the role of international bodies such as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in regulating maritime activities. Real-world scenarios will be analyzed to provide insight into pressing issues like disputes over territorial waters, environmental protection, piracy, and the regulation of shipping routes.

Programme also emphasizes the ethical responsibilities of maritime operations, focusing on how law can ensure safe, secure, and sustainable use of the oceans. By integrating theoretical knowledge with practical challenges, the course highlights the indispensable role of Maritime Law in fostering global cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

Upon successful completion, participants will gain a solid foundation in Maritime Law, equipping them to address legal complexities in the maritime sector with confidence. They will also be prepared to contribute meaningfully to the development of policies and frameworks that ensure responsible utilization of our oceans, reinforcing the principle that Maritime Law is the compass guiding humanity towards justice, security, and sustainability in the marine realm.
