About SAMATVA: The Legal Aid Society

SAMATVA: The Legal Aid and Awareness Society at the School of Law, NMIMS Indore, has been a trailblazer in promoting legal awareness and bridging socio-economic disparities through initiatives such as Legal Awareness Campaigns, Street Vendor Programs, Prison Visits, and Lok Adalat Awareness Drives. Our commitment to social justice recently earned us an invitation to participate in SAMVAD – Annual State Consultations on the Protection of Children with Disabilities, organized in collaboration with the Hon’ble High Court of Madhya Pradesh, MP State Legal Services Authority, and UNICEF Bhopal.

DETAILS ABOUT THE EVENT/OPPORTUNITY

The first edition of the event, 1st National Legal Aid Policy Drafting Competition, 2024, conducted in online mode, was a resounding success. In this second edition, we decided to improvise our initiative even further, and devise it in the form of a convention rather than a traditional policy drafting competition. The reasons behind this were to ensure greater participation of specially abled individuals in policy making, and bring together eminent individuals from different walks of life, be it judiciary, government, NGOs, think tanks etc under the same roof, in order to encourage constructive deliberations and fine tuning of policies. This event will be held offline at NMIMS Indore Campus. The dynamic format of this competition, a first of its kind in India, is designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application of legal knowledge in the context of disability rights. The format involves three stages, highlighted as follows:

1. Policy Submission: The Competition would be open to all students enrolled in 3-year or 5-year law programs across the country. The participants will submit a written draft of the detailed policy on ensuring equal rights and better accessibility to legal aid and opportunities in society.

2. Policy Discussion: Amongst the written submissions of policies, the top 8 teams would be shortlisted by an external editorial board comprising academicians, research scholars, disability rights advocates etc. These teams would participate in the quarter-final, semi-final and final rounds of the competition, to be held at the NMIMS Indore campus, where they would be judged on the basis of their research, discussion, positive criticism of the other’s policy.

3. Policy Hearing: The finalists after completing their round will be required to conduct a public hearing of their policy, where they will be pitching their policies to specially-abled individuals, media, and disability rights advocates, making the policy simulation exercise truly inclusive.

WHO IS IT FOR / ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE

This Competition is open to undergraduate students enrolled in five-year or three-year LLB programs from any recognised university or college in India.

MODE OF THE EVENT (ONLINE / OFFLINE OR HYBRID) –  

The Preliminary Round will be online, where participants would be required to submit soft copies of their policy drafts.

Quarterfinals, Semi-finals, and Finals will be conducted offline at SVKM’s NMIMS Indore Campus.

1. All interested students shall be required to register for the competition in order to be eligible to participate in the same before 03.2025 (11:59 PM).
2. The registration fee is Rs. 700/-. The same shall be non-refundable.
3. The link for registration form – https://forms.gle/DG6arzb6cLJm45Bp6 The teams shall ensure that the details filled by them in the above form are correct, as they will be used for preparing certificates.
4. The payment of the registration fee must be made according to the payment guidelines provided in this brochure. For payment details, kindly refer to the Payment Guidelines section of the brochure.
5. The registration shall be deemed to be successful only when the participating team receives confirmation of mail along with their team code from the Organising Committee.
6. Any changes in the contact details of Team members must be notified to the Organising Committee through mail at the earliest.
7. The 8 shortlisted teams for policy discussion rounds would be further required to pay Rs. 3000/- for accomodation and food at NMIMS Indore Campus. The method of payment would be similar to that of payment of registration fee. Additional information or guidelines (if any) shall be communicated on mail beforehand to the shortlisted teams.
