What is NLSAT-LLB and Who Should Apply?

NLSAT-LLB is the entrance examination for NLSIU’s three-year LL.B. (Hons.) programme.

The university introduced this programme in 2022 to provide professional legal education to graduates from different disciplines.

It accepts eligible bachelor’s degree holders from Arts, Commerce, Science, Engineering, Management and other recognised academic backgrounds.

Candidates need not possess a previous law degree.

The programme offers a route into legal practice for graduates wishing to pursue advocacy, corporate legal work, legal research and related careers.

Is the Three-Year LL.B. a Postgraduate Degree?

NLSIU describes its three-year LL.B. as a postgraduate professional programme because admission requires a bachelor’s degree.

However, the qualification awarded is LL.B. (Hons.), not LL.M.

The degree satisfies the university’s published Bar Council of India recognition requirements for professional legal education.

Graduates may subsequently seek enrolment with a State Bar Council, subject to applicable rules.

NLSAT-LLB 2027 Examination Pattern

The examination contains two compulsory parts.

ComponentQuestion formatMaximum marks
Part A75 multiple-choice questions75
Part BShort-answer legal reasoning and analytical essay75
TotalObjective and descriptive150

The total examination duration is 150 minutes.

Candidates must attempt both parts within the prescribed examination period.

Part A: Objective Examination

Part A contains 75 multiple-choice questions carrying one mark each.

It tests:

  • Reading and Comprehension.
  • General Awareness.
  • Critical Reasoning.

The objective section determines which candidates qualify for evaluation of their descriptive answers.

Part A Marking Scheme

ResponseMarks
Correct answer+1
Incorrect answer−0.25
Unanswered question−0.25

Unanswered questions also attract negative marking.

This differs from many law entrance examinations, where unanswered questions carry zero marks.

Candidates should understand this rule while developing their question-attempt strategy.

Part B: Descriptive Examination

Part B carries 75 marks.

The official syllabus identifies two assessment areas.

Legal Aptitude and Reasoning: Candidates answer problem-based questions using short written responses.

Analytical Ability: Candidates write an essay demonstrating understanding, argumentation and structured expression.

Prior knowledge of Law is not required.

The university expects candidates to interpret information and present reasoned conclusions.

NLSAT-LLB 2027 Detailed Syllabus

NLSIU prescribes skill-based examination areas rather than an extensive list of statutory subjects.

1. Reading and Comprehension

This section evaluates the ability to understand complex written material.

Important preparation areas include:

  • Identifying central arguments.
  • Understanding supporting reasoning.
  • Recognising assumptions.
  • Drawing passage-based inferences.
  • Understanding contextual vocabulary.
  • Distinguishing facts from opinions.
  • Comparing competing arguments.
  • Identifying contradictions.

Candidates should regularly practise reading substantial analytical passages.

2. General Awareness

The syllabus includes awareness of important contemporary and social developments.

Candidates should follow:

  • Significant national events.
  • International affairs.
  • Constitutional and governance developments.
  • Public policy.
  • Important social issues.
  • Economic developments.
  • Culture and society.
  • Contemporary legal developments.

The university does not prescribe a fixed current-affairs date range.

Candidates should therefore focus on understanding events and their broader context.

3. Critical Reasoning

Critical Reasoning assesses the evaluation of arguments and conclusions.

Important preparation areas include:

  • Identifying premises and conclusions.
  • Drawing valid inferences.
  • Recognising assumptions.
  • Strengthening and weakening arguments.
  • Assessing logical consistency.
  • Detecting reasoning errors.
  • Understanding cause-and-effect relationships.
  • Evaluating competing explanations.

Candidates should develop the ability to distinguish persuasive language from logically supported conclusions.

4. Legal Aptitude and Reasoning

Part B requires candidates to respond to legal problems.

A question may supply a legal principle followed by a hypothetical factual situation.

Candidates must analyse the supplied rule and apply it to the facts.

A well-structured response should:

  • Identify the relevant legal principle.
  • Recognise legally material facts.
  • Apply the stated principle.
  • Address relevant qualifications.
  • Present a supported conclusion.

NLSIU expressly states that prior knowledge of law is unnecessary.

Therefore, memorising entire statutes is not the principal preparation method.

5. Analytical Essay Writing

The essay tests the candidate’s ability to construct a coherent argument.

Relevant preparation skills include:

  • Understanding the essay question.
  • Developing a clear central position.
  • Presenting logically arranged arguments.
  • Evaluating opposing viewpoints.
  • Using relevant examples.
  • Maintaining clarity and coherence.
  • Reaching a reasoned conclusion.

Candidates should practise discussing contemporary issues without relying on unsupported assertions.

NLSAT-LLB 2027 Selection Process

The 2027 admission notification prescribes a multi-stage evaluation.

Stage 1: Part A Screening

Part A determines which candidates qualify for descriptive-answer evaluation.

Candidates must secure more than zero marks in Part A.

The university then shortlists candidates for Part B evaluation in a 1:5 ratio, meaning five candidates per available seat within each applicable category.

Stage 2: Part B Evaluation

Only shortlisted candidates have their descriptive answer scripts evaluated.

The university prepares the final rank list using cumulative marks in Parts A and B.

Stage 3: Qualifying Percentile Requirements

Candidates must satisfy the prescribed category-specific conditions.

CategoryRequired aggregate performance
General / EWSAbove the 75th percentile of eligible candidates
SC / ST / OBC-NCL / PwDAbove the 40th percentile of eligible candidates

Candidates must also obtain more than zero marks in both Parts A and B.

These percentile requirements are based on the combined Parts A and B scores.

A percentile is not the same as a percentage of maximum marks.

For example, the 75th percentile describes relative performance among eligible candidates. It does not automatically mean obtaining 75% of 150 marks.

Tie-Breaking Rules

Where candidates obtain equal combined marks in Parts A and B, higher Part B marks determine their relative rank.

Final Admission

NLSIU will communicate final offers through its admission portal by the end of May 2027.

Provisional admission becomes final only after document verification and fee payment.

The domestic LL.B. admission notification does not prescribe a separate interview stage.

Candidates must not confuse it with the international selection process, which has different requirements.

NLSAT-LLB 2027 Seats and Reservation Policy

NLSIU has announced a maximum intake of 120 students.

Vertical Reservation

CategoryReservation
Scheduled Castes15%
Scheduled Tribes7.5%
Other Backward Classes27%
Economically Weaker Section10%

Horizontal Reservation

The university additionally prescribes:

  • 5% horizontal reservation for Persons with Disabilities.
  • 30% horizontal reservation for women.
  • 25% compartmentalised horizontal reservation for Karnataka Students.

These horizontal reservations operate within the prescribed category framework.

They must not simply be added to the total intake as extra seats.

Karnataka Students Reservation

Candidates who studied for at least seven years in recognised Karnataka educational institutions may qualify under this category.

The notification also provides specified exceptions for children of eligible serving or retired personnel.

Candidates claiming these exceptions must satisfy the detailed service and study-period conditions.

They should preserve their study certificates and supporting documents.

The complete conditions appear in the official NLSAT-LLB 2027 notification.

NLSIU Three-Year LL.B. Fees

The university publishes programme fees separately from examination application charges.

The following figures belong to the 2026–2027 academic year and provide a historical reference.

Fee componentPublished annual amount
Tuition and facilities₹3,18,200
Off-campus housing and associated services₹1,88,200
Combined annual amount₹5,06,400

Additional one-time charges in the published schedule include:

  • Admission fee: ₹13,900.
  • Refundable security deposit for SC/ST students: ₹18,800.
  • Refundable security deposit for other students: ₹23,700.

Housing fees are payable according to the applicable accommodation allocation.

The university provides information about financial aid, scholarships and education loans.

The 2027–2028 payable amounts should be verified once updated.

NLSAT Previous-Year Question Papers (PYQs) and Official Sample Papers

NLSIU does not routinely publish complete past NLSAT entrance question papers.

The university expressly states that official sample questions are provided to registered candidates instead.

No publicly accessible, verifiable previous-year paper was found in the sources checked as of 26 October 2026.

The absence of a publicly authenticated question booklet should not be confused with the non-existence of independently prepared practice material.

The 2022 sample document contains objective questions, legal reasoning exercises and indicative descriptive instructions.

Its historical numerical distribution should not automatically be treated as the detailed 2027 question allocation.

Some preparation websites distribute documents labelled as actual previous-year papers. Their authenticity should be checked before relying upon them.

How to Use Official Sample Questions

Attempt the objective passages under timed conditions.

Review every incorrect answer and examine the reasoning involved.

For descriptive questions, practise writing concise applications of supplied legal principles.

Essay answers should present a clear argument, relevant examples and a meaningful conclusion.

The university also organises faculty-led preparation webinars for eligible applicants.

NLSAT-LLB 2027 Preparation Strategy

Improve Reading Comprehension

Develop a consistent reading habit using analytical articles, essays and editorial discussions.

Focus on identifying the author’s principal argument and supporting reasoning.

Practise Critical Reasoning

Work on assumptions, inferences, argument evaluation and logical consistency.

Review the reasons behind incorrect options.

Strengthen Current Affairs Understanding

Study important events with their political, economic and social contexts.

Avoid treating current affairs solely as a collection of isolated facts.

Practise Legal Problem-Based Answers

Use hypothetical legal problems to develop analytical writing.

The emphasis should remain on applying stated principles rather than quoting unfamiliar statutory provisions.

Develop Essay Writing Skills

Practise structured essays on contemporary legal, social and public policy issues.

Maintain a clear position while fairly examining competing arguments.

Prepare for the Part A Screening Rule

Part A determines whether Part B is evaluated.

Candidates should therefore prioritise accuracy and completion of the objective section.

Because unanswered questions attract deductions, examination strategy must reflect the actual marking scheme.
